The most important tasks of the ECU, which are optimized with ChipTuning
Ignition timing
In order to be able to effectively use the fuel energy saving it is important, at all times depending upon rpm, load, temperature and other control parameter to compute the correct ignition time - with diesel engines the optimal injection pressure.

Fuel injection
Depending upon air mass, rpm, load and other correcting factors the electronics computes the necessary duration of injection and amount of fuel to be injected. This ensures better fuel consumption, reduced pollutants and is responsible for an increase of the specific engine performance.
Boost control
For vehicles with turbo-loading additional calculations and adjustments, by the controller, of the size of the boost and load volume are necessary.
Dwell control
Depending upon rpm, the time between the ignition control signals varies. To ensure a constant ignition energy a certain primary current is necessary. To build up this current requires a certain amount of time, which is not always possible at higher rpm. This can lead to ignition misfires developing at the higher speed range.

Knocking control
For modern economical engines the aim for a high compression ratio, in order to achieve a high torque, which has the effect of reducing specific consumption. However, in the case of increased compression the danger of uncontrolled spontaneous combustion rises, whereby a "knocking" burn develops. From the signals of the engine mount vibration sensor, the ECU adjusts the ignition toward "late".

Lambda control
The air/fuel mixture is regulated by the micro controller and depends upon the exhaust gas composition (measured by the Lambda sensor) and on the ideal composition (Lambda=1), in order to achieve a high catalyst efficiency and low pollutant level.

Idling control
Different engine temperatures and the associated friction values, as well as contamination of the inlets and many further factors lead to different idling speeds with same bypass cross section. The various controllable parameters are varied by the idling control, through the rev counter in such a way that the rpm remains at a constant, defined value.

Exhaust gas recirculation
In order to increase the exhaust quality, exhaust gas are added, in a calculated quantity, to fresh manifold air.

Service and safety functions
- monitoring of the plausibility of the adjusted values, in order to prevent malfunctions.
- stringent monitoring of "drive by wire - systems", now installed into all modern vehicles”
- recognition of defects in the sensor technology or actuators with storage in the diagnostic system
Beside these points the engine ECU has still further important tasks, which are not of great interest for ChipTuning.
